Finland Master's Documents Checklist. What to Prepare Before You Apply

Finland shares Sweden's centralised application model through Studyinfo.fi and universityadmissions.fi. The document checklist is strict, and missing the supplementary upload deadline disqualifies otherwise strong applications.

This checklist covers the standard Autumn intake route. Adjust if you target a limited Spring programme.

Document checklist overview

Step 1: certified copies and translations

Finland requires official copies, not plain scans:

• Transcripts and degree certificates must be certified by your university or a notary.
• Documents not in English, Finnish, or Swedish need authorised translations.
• Some universities accept digital certification; others require physical copies mailed before the deadline.

Order certified copies before the application window opens (mid-October). Peak season delays at registrars are common.

Step 2: the application portal timeline

Applications run through Studyinfo.fi linked to universityadmissions.fi:

• Application window: 16 October to 15 January for Autumn intake.
• Supplementary document deadline: 1 February (firm).
• Application fee: EUR 100 for the autumn round (verify current amount).

You may apply to up to six programmes across Finnish universities. Rank them in preference order.

Step 3: English language proof

English-taught programmes typically require:

• IELTS Academic: 6.5 overall, no band below 5.5 (programme-specific).
• TOEFL iBT: 92+ with writing minimum 22.
• PTE Academic: 62+ at some institutions.

Exemptions apply for degrees completed entirely in English in recognised countries. Request written confirmation of exemption eligibility before skipping the test.

Step 4: motivation letter standards

Finnish committees expect concise, evidence-based letters:

• Length: typically one to two pages.
• Content: link your Bachelor's coursework and projects to the programme's stated learning outcomes.
• Avoid: generic study-abroad narratives without programme-specific references.

Some universities (Aalto, Helsinki) require a separate statement uploaded on their own portal after the central application. Check both systems.

Step 5: reference letters

Most programmes require two academic references:

• Referees should know your academic work, not only employment.
• Some portals send automatic reference requests; others require you to upload signed PDFs on letterhead.
• Follow up with referees two weeks before the deadline.

Step 6: tuition and scholarship documents

Non-EU/EEA students pay tuition, commonly €8,000 to €18,000+ per year:

• After admission, you receive a tuition invoice with a payment deadline.
• Scholarship applicants may need a separate scholarship application with its own essay and CV.
• Finnish Government Scholarship Pool (CGSP) targets specific nationalities; verify eligibility before preparing extra documents.

Step 7: residence permit documents (after admission)

After paying tuition and accepting your place:

• Letter of acceptance from the university.
• Tuition payment confirmation or scholarship letter.
• Comprehensive health insurance if required.
• Proof of funds for living costs (verify current EUR amounts on migri.fi).
• Passport valid beyond your study period.

Apply for the residence permit immediately. Processing times vary from weeks to months.

Common failure modes

1. Uploading uncertified scans. Fix: obtain official certified copies before January.
2. Missing the 1 February deadline. Fix: treat certification as a month-one task.
3. Generic motivation letter. Fix: reference specific courses and faculty at each programme.
4. Referees not responding in time. Fix: contact referees in November, not January.
